Kinetic Architecture + Biomimicry

We are always interacting with nature, and it's interacting back. We are always interacting with architecture, but it doesn't respond as kinetically as nature does. I am interested in learning more about how the balance and cycles of nature can be implemented in architecture, to create more of a two-way interaction between a building and an inhabitant.

I read some articles about kinetic architecture and biomimicry. I'm looking into both, together and separately, to get a well-rounded collection of research. There's a lot of new and evolving technology for dynamic facades, using electropolymeric technologies. I read some of the news and research from C.A.S.E. about how this can be used to allow in varying amounts of sunlight throughout the day. They also had some interesting research about utilizing planting in the facade structure to filter air and improve indoor air quality, which I thought was interesting. This post's cover image is from that article.

Another example of innovative kinetic design I saw was in the UK Architectural Journal. I'll attach the link down below, but there was an architecture student who designed a kinetic structural scheme that is very interesting. See below.

I still have a lot of reading to do on nature, and more kinetic ideas, but these were a few really interesting articles I looked at this week.

  1. Virginia,
I look forward to see where you will take this idea. I don't know if this is related to what you are researching, but it would be interesting if there are wall systems that holds water and slowly releases it to water the greenery that is attached to the wall. Essentially, a living green wall that can sustain itself from recycled/collected water from the building. I know the Singapore Airport has a huge feature with vegetation, it would be interesting if that project could offer insight in your topic of research.

  2. Virginia I love your new topic selection! This is really interesting and it reminds me of the nature topic week in theory. I'm really excited to see where you go with it
